"Not Your Journey To Take"

BOOK REVIEWS

This book is insightful, compassionate and compelling.  I too had my step son and nephew incarcerated but it happened while I was out of the country.

I am positive that had I been stateside I would have been in the same scenario as you found yourself.  As I said before a must for people who have family incarcerated.

In her book, Not Your Journey to Take, Kesha Mason Campbell provides practical strategies connected to her experience of supporting her incarcerated family members.  Kesha Mason Campbell shares her journey of dealing with her siblings who were incarcerated and helps her readers understand the difficult journey that loved ones of incarcerated individuals will face.  Although friends and relatives may not have committed a crime, she shares that they oftentimes are burdened with the responsibility of dealing with the wants and needs of their incarcerated loved one.

Kesha Mason Campbell helps the readers face the tough issues that they will experience while they support their loved one.  She challenges the readers to focus on themselves and their individual wholeness at the forefront of their considerations while they support their loved one.  She encourages her readers to live their lives and pursue their own dreams.

Her book discusses the importance of setting boundaries and being supportive of their loved ones and challenges the readers not to lose themselves in the process.  She operates from the principle that the readers should not be doing time with their loved one, and they should live their own lives and allow their loved ones to take responsibility for their own actions and learn from their mistakes.

We often learn about the struggles of those who have gone to prison, their life in prison and what life is like when they come home. It is not often we know what the families go through and those close to them when their loved one gets incarcerated for an extended period of time.

In this book the author really takes you through the stresses that were put on the family, the money spent and losing out on time to focus on her own dreams. I thought while reading, wow, this is not only a physical struggle also a mental and financial struggle. Tight knit families don’t give up on each other often but it sure could get to that point.

I think this book will let other families know they are not alone; they don’t have to lose sight and sacrifice everything. There is a way to cope and help a loved one and not feel guilty about their own life in the process!

I loved this book. It was easy to read and had great points. If you ever had a loved one in prison and was trying to give them everything they wanted or needed but was struggling on the outside trying to make ends meet, this book is for you. The book teaches you that it’s ok to say NO! Great read!

A wonderful, easy to read book. It is a personal story (journey) that most don’t talk about, yet so many can relate to.
